Kenelm Digby's Copy of Thomas White

Euclides Metaphysicus, Sive, De Principiis Sapientiae, Stoechediea E. [Kenelm Digby's Copy] J.M [John Macock] John Martin; James Allestry, Thomas Dicas [ 1658 ]

Description

[16] pp 198 [2] Kenelm Digby's copy of his recusant friend and fellow philosopher's commentary on Euclid, bound in full seventeenth century red goatskin, gilt spine and borders, inner dentelles and edges. Digby's fleur de lys in a shield on the covers, his 'KD' cypher to corners of cover panels and spine compartments (Delisle Type IV binding). A little darkening to the spine, slight rubbing to corners, otherwise very good condition; text collated and complete with preliminary and final blanks as called for, ruled throughout, very lightly in red ink panels around text. This copy ex-Glyn Cywarch, the Welsh seat of the 7th Baron Harlech. By the early 1640s Digby had spent time with Descartes in Egmont and together the 'privateer alchemist Digby and his gritty mentor Father Thomas White, alias "Blacklo"' joined Mersenne's circle in Paris, 'thrown together by fate' and jointly working to 'develop a comprehensive mechanistic philosophy' (Vlad Alexandrescu, 2012). White dedicated one of his works to Digby and this copy is also, no doubt, a presentation copy bound in Digby's house-style of the time of which there are various analogues including White's Sonus Buccinæ (Paris 1654) Item 183 - Sir Kenelm Digby, F.R.S., 1603-1665: A Bibliography - Davida Rubin, 1991. See also Robert S Pirie, Lot 250, Thomas White, A Catechism, Kenelm Digby's copy, $6875. ESTC R19855.
