Description

[1] ff29 Very good series of Flemish copper engraved prints published around 1600 after Maarten de Vos' drawings of hermits. Attractively bound in continental half parchment over marbled boards with a spine label and gilt decoration; rubbing to extremities. Engraved title page with publication details of this Roman version of the collection (though no exact date) followed by 29 numbered engravings showing male and female hermits in a variety of semi-urban and wilderness yet still north-European settings, many of the figures with book in hand or engaged in scholarly activities. Plate mark: 20.5x16.5cm; page dimensions 28x20.5cm. Old staining to first few leaves, and top corner of remaining pages; finger marking where pages have been turned. Collated and complete. Book label on first pastedown of English book collector James Pope-Hennessy. This collection was created in 1587 while Jan Sadeler was a citizen of Frankfurt am Main and probably printed by Aegidius Sadeler; they were first engraved by Jan and Raphael Sadeler after Maarten de Vos c.1585.
