First Edition, First Issue of Churchill's rare first book. 8vo. (7.3 x 5.1 inches).
Frontispiece portrait and 6 maps. Finely bound, without the publishers adverts, in full burgundy morocco by Bayntun (Riviere) of Bath, UK. Spine with five raised bands, each with 3 gilt circles. The compartments ruled, lettered and stamped with the Rampant Lion device in gilt. Single gilt ruled border on boards. Front board has a gilt stamped facsimile of Churchill's signature in the centre. Inner boards with double ruled and one wavy line border and floral corner decoration to the turn-ins. Marbled endpapers. Original Publisher's green cloth front board and spine bound in at the rear. All edges gilt. Housed in a felt lined slipcase with burgundy cloth covering.

Overall a fine copy of this famous book. Based on his exploits with the Malakand Field Force, led by Sir Bindon Blood, on the Northwest Frontier of India in 1897, as first reported by him in the Daily Telegraph. The publication was arranged by Churchill's cousin as he was still in India.
